The Supreme Court of Liberia takes note of a recent statement issued in Monrovia by the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), in which the CPP accused the Court and the National Elections Commission (NEC) of “a deliberate and unjustified violation of the Liberian Constitution” regarding the election case which emanated from Grand Cape Mount County involving CPP’s Candidate, Simeon B. Taylor, and the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC)’s Candidate, Victor V. Watson.
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia, His Honor Francis S. Korkpor, Sr. says that “the rule of law is fundamental to national and international peace and security and political stability, and the rule of law is essential to the people’s access to public services and curbing corruption”. Chief Justice Korkpor made these assertions at the start of the 4th National Judicial Conference convened at the Ministerial Complex,
Congo Town, outside Monrovia.
Liberia’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Cllr. Frank Musa Dean has said
that both the Executive and Legislative branches of government are committed to working with the Judiciary in the implementation of recommendations coming out of the 4th National Judicial Conference.
The Judiciary Branch of Government has convened its 4th National Judicial Conference as required by the Revised Rules of the Supreme Court of Liberia.
The Conference brought together hundreds of participants including Justices, Judges, Magistrates, lawyers, financial experts, and other relevant stakeholders to discuss burning issues affecting law, public policy and the Liberian economy.
On December 9, 2020, International Anti-Corruption Day, the United States Treasury Department, in a statement captioned: “Treasury Sanctions Corrupt Actors in Africa and Asia”, placed the Global Magnitsky Designations on several individuals in some countries including Liberia.
Once again, it is time, as dictated by law, to open this Court for the dispatch of business for the March Term, A.D. 2020. In my own name and on behalf of my esteemed Colleagues of the Supreme Court Bench, I welcome all of you to these opening ceremonies and extend to you hearty greetings and good wishes.
Judge Banwon, who delivered his Charge after being officially seated as Resident Judge by Associate Justice Joseph N. Nagbe, was quick to mention that while they were determined to improve the justice system of the county, River Cess was faced with the monumental challenge of the acute shortage of trained manpower to man the institutions of justice upon their establishment.
